Max and Chloe are back together
Last time we saw a Life is Strange game it was a couple years ago. Back in 2024 we got Life is Strange: Double Exposure, continuing the original protagonist Max Caulfield’s story. I did reviewed it giving it a 3/5 score, saying it was “a lukewarm experience”. Life is Strange: Reunion let us play and see yet again another Max’s adventures.
I played Life is Strange: Reunion on PS5 Pro.
Plot
The previous game followed Max and how she was working at the Caledon university as a teacher, teaching photography. Life is Strange: Reunion continues that story, this time with her childhood best friend coming back to her life. I’m not going through all the happenings thusfar, but shortly; Max has superpowers. She can rewind time—but there is a catch. Every time she does big changes there are consequences to her actions. In her childhood she managed to safe Chloe from death, but what cause? Well, the whole town got destoyed. Now there is another big catastrophe in horizon; the whole university is going to burn down killing her friends. Max has to do everything she can to stop it. Find the person behind the fire.
Overall I did like the story, a lot. It had mystery and whodunnit elements. I have usually always liked Life is Strange games’ stories, this particularly was a good one. I would like to go deeper into the story, but I like to keep my reviews as spoiler-free as possible.
Gameplay, controls, audio and visuals
The gameplay was kinda boring and lackluster. I did find speaking with people to be interesting and making the choices intriguing, but there wasn’t much anything else to it. Max has to collect as much information, by talking to everyone, and evidences as possible to make the most life-changing decisions in the game, especially at the end. So shortly, the game is mostly just talking to people and rewinding time to make them forget things. I would’ve liked there to be some new mechanics or something else she could’ve used her powers on.
Controls. Well, players can move Max around and talk to people, rewind time, sometimes even collect items… and that’s it. They worked well and that’s it.
Like every other Life is Strange game, Reunion was also fully voice acted. I think the acting was good and believeable, which comes to the next topic…
…that is the visuals. Visually the game looked ugly and dated. Even the characters didn’t emote enough to make them believeable in that matter. Then there were the countless of visual bugs and glitches. There were so many of them that I’m not even gonna list them here. What I’m gonna say is that this game needs a patch and badly.
Choices, choices and choices
Life is Strange: Reunion is an OK game. I played it through in about 7-8 hours. I did like the plot much more than in the previous title. Reunion had mystery and it was intriguing to find the truth. But graphically the game has no excuse to look this bad, in this day and age. If you like a little adventure-mystery game, well I think this game is for you. There’s also very good replayability value as you can try to make different decisions and possibly save everyone. But still it is not worth the full asking price which was 50€. You should buy this when it is on sale.
Life is Strange: Reunion is available on PS5 (reviewed on PS5 Pro), Xbox Series X|S and Windows.
