Telltale studio is back!

We almost lost the whole talented Telltale Games studio a few years ago due the studio quitting. Their most known games are probably The Walking Dead series, which I enjoyed a lot. But thankfully the studio is back and their newest game The Expanse: A Telltale Series released July 27, 2023. I don’t know much about the game other than it’s same kind of graphic adventure game, just a game like the studio used to do, and it’s based on a television series. I have never seen the TV series and I’m going into this game totally blind.

Does the studio still have it? Is The Expanse: A Telltale Series any good?

Story, gameplay, controls and visuals

The story tells about Camina Drummer who is a part of scavenging group that collects valuable trash in the space. Everything doesn’t go as planned; there are close-death experiences, betraylas and pirates she has to endure. The story overall was OK, even though I think the episodes were kinda short.

Gameplay in The Expanse: A Telltale Series was rather simple, as it used to be with the studio’s other games. You play as Camina Drummer and it’s mostly going from A to B and finding some certain objects. Also talking with crew members and doing choices that will shape the story and ending.

Controls are simple, there’s nothing much I can say about them. You can interact with other people, walk around, fly in zero-gravity and all the shooting and action scenes are QTEs.

Visually The Expanse: A Telltale Series looks OK. Well, it was PS4 version I played, so it looked very much like the previous gen game. The game was fully voice acted, which was a good thing. It made all the characters and situations so much more tense.

The game was fully voice acted and it had many original actors from the TV series voice acting the game characters. That is a huge plus.

Final Verdict

The Expanse: A Telltale Series was a good experience even though the episodes were rather short. It does have a great replayability value, since you can play it again and do choices you didn’t do in the first run.
