It’s Ada’s time to shine
Separate Ways is a DLC for the main game of Resident Evil 4 remake. The extra content was available on the original release of the game back in 2005. You could access the content after beating the main game. In the remake, the DLC is not free, so if you want to experience Separate Ways you have to shell out a few coins. But is it worth it?
Story from Ada’s perspective
Separate Ways tells the extra story of Resident Evil 4 main game, where you play as Leon. He bumps into Ada (a secret agent hired by Albert Wesker) multiple times during the story. However, the DLC shows everything that happened between them. Ada needs to collect “the Amber,” which is the very source of the Las Plagas parasites. These parasites turn their hosts into evil villains and some of them into monsters. Ada strikes a deal with a man named Luis to retrieve the Amber. So, this is the main plot of the DLC, and it has a lot of twists and turns. The game also reveals different facets of Ada: is she as cold and calculated as she was in the previous games? Or is there more to her than meets the eye?
I liked the story and how it was written and overall built around the main story. I know there was some bickering online towards the Ada’s voice actor. People were not satisfied with her acting performance and they said she has ruined Ada as a character. Well, I did like how she acter her role. Ada is cold outside and even her voice is very monotone. I think she did wonderful job to bring Ada alive.
Gameplay, Controls And Visuals
The gameplay is almost the same as in the main game. But Ada has a grappling hook gun which she can use to travel faster from place to place, and also to fight the enemies. Ada encounters the same villains as Leon did in the main game but Ada deals with them a little bit differently. There are also new enemies and bosses, which are a very nice addition. Talking about bosses; I enjoyed the boss fight very much. As every Resident Evil game, Separate Ways also has really well-designed bosses. We cannot forget the ever mysterious seller, he is also in the DLC, which means Ada can upgrade the guns and buy other items. I mainly used the handgun that was given to me in the beginning. Secondly, I used a shotgun and machine gun. That’s what I usually do in games like this where there are plenty of guns to choose from, I just stick to the basics.
The controls felt slow to me. Aiming and moving the camera felt too slow, and I had to go through the options to get it just right. There are tons of options, and I suggest you go through them in the beginning. In every other way, the controls felt just right.
I played this on my PS5 console and the graphics were the same high quality as in the main game. All the characters looked lifelike and environments were realistic. I didn’t notice any graphical issues or pop-ups. The game’s creator studio Capcom uses their own video game engine called RE Engine. It’s obvious that they know what they’re doing and hopefully the engine just gets better in the upcoming years.
Who gets the amber in the end?
I played this Assist mode (the easiest setting) and I still managed to die two times. Well, I’m an average player and I always admire those who can play games at the hardest difficulty. I finished it in 3.5 hours and it felt just the right amount of gameplay and something that could be played again in one sitting. If you enjoyed Resident Evil 4 remake this is a must-play DLC.
