Sam Eng game

Skate Story is developed by an American indie developer Sam Eng. This is their second video game, the first being a game called Zarvot. As usually, I knew very little about Skate Story before I jumped in. What got me interested was the unique art style and gameplay. I played Skate Story through on PS5 Pro.

Plot

The story is about a demon as they make a deal with the Devil. If they skate all the way to the Moon and swallow it, they’ll be freed from the Undeworld. Yes, the plot is as simple as that. What makes it richer are the tormented souls the protagonist encounters along the way and a rabbit that seems to help them to be free.

Overall, I found the story to be very interesting. Skate Story had this weird take on everything, shining with its uniqueness.

Gameplay, controls, audio and visuals

The gameplay in Skate Story is rather simple to follow. Player must skate on level-based system that are full of obstacles where, if hit, will deplete health. Also, if player hit certain obstacles they will fall and break into pieces, as the main character is made of glass. There are some hub areas where player can collect hidden things, do other things like learn new skate moves. Players can do various move combos to gain more points. Skate Story also has boss battles and I think that was the best parts of the whole game as the boss battles were inventive—even if sometimes challenging—but fun to beat.

Controlling the protagonist was good. It took some used to but I think the controls worked just fine. There are many authentical skating moves player will learn along the gameplay. But with that said, I did find doing combos little bit difficult in a quick fashion.

The whole game isn’t voice acted, if you really wanted to know that, but it didn’t even needed to be. Skate Story has very nice soundtracks. I rarely enjoy video games’ musics that much as I did enjoy in this game.

Visually the game shines like a bright star. It has extremely unique visual style, making everything look like a psychedelic dream.

DOes swallowing the Moon make me look fat?

Skate Story was interesting and fulfilling experience. Its lore, art style and gameplay mechanics were something new and exciting. I played it through in about 6 hours. Some boss battles felt little bit tricky, but I did enjoy the whole ensemble. Even if you don’t like skating games, this is truly an unique game you should try out.

Skate Story is available on PS5 (reviewed using PS5 Pro), Nintendo Switch 2, Windows and macOS.
