From Crafted World to Mysterious Book
The last time we got a Yoshi game it was 7 years ago. Back in 2019 Yoshi’s Crafted World was released on Nintendo Switch. It was a nice and cosy game. The newest entry Yoshi and the Mysterious Book was released on Nintendo Switch 2 just recently. I had to play it through, not just because I’m Yoshi fan, but the game looked interesting and another cosy game to be played on a slow afternoon.

Plot
The game starts with Bowser Jr., discovering an old book that gives information on many unique creatures. He takes the book and flies away with it, trying to find the Bewilder Bird from the book. But above where the Yoshis live, he manages to teleport himself into the book, and the book drops down. Yoshis find the mysterious book that is actually alive one. The Yoshis help the book by teleporting inside its pages, studying the habits of each of the book’s creatures, and naming them. As the Yoshis discover more odd habitants, they have several run-ins with Bowser Jr., who is still searching for the Bewilder Bird with the help of sorcerer, Kamek.
Gameplay, controls, audio and visuals
Yoshi and the Mysterious Book is a side-scrolling platform game. What players do is going on a little missions on each of mysterious book’s pages and explore the habitants. What they do, how they taste like, what special abilities they have and so on. Yoshi can indeed eat them and make an egg of them, that are used for shooting. Yoshi can also take the habitants on his back and use their special abilities in various ways. Yoshi and the Mysterious Book encourages players to explore and try new things and combinations. The levels are usually rather small but there are lots to find and hidden things to uncover everywhere. After every main mission is done players can exit the level. There are 6 main chapters and after the credits roll there are 4 extra chapters available which expands the story even more.
Controlling Yoshi feels good, but sometimes the special abilities the habitants have might feel awkward to use and control. Every level had something new to try and to be done.
Yoshi and the Mysterious Book has nice mellow music and the usual Yoshi sound effects.
Visually the game looks good and adorable. Very much like watercoloured book, with lots of colourful characters and areas.

Verdict
Yoshi and the Mysterious Book was very kawaii experience. It has good level design, nice characters to be find and well-designed gameplay. I played this through in about 8 hours, but there are extra chapters after the main game, and finding everything in the game takes easily over 20 hours. If you want something cosy for a change I do recommend Yoshi and the Mysterious Book to you.
Yoshi and the Mysterious Book is only available on Nintendo Switch 2.
