Delay after delay
Pragmata, a new game from Capcom studio that is know of games like Resident Evil, was initially revealed back in 2020. After that there had been multiple delays and even rumours of cancellation. However, Pragmata was finally released on April 17, 2026. There was a playable demo which I tried before buying the game as I wasn’t sure about the gameplay mechanics. I did liked the system and therefore decided to buy the game at launch.
I played Pragmata through on PS5 Pro.
Plot
Pragmata is a sci-fi action-adventure game where spacefarer Hugh and a mysterious, childlike android named Diana navigate a desolate lunar research facility. They work together to fight a hostile AI known as IDUS that has taken over the station. They try to find Hugh’s missing partners, survive hostile robots and, ultimately, go back to Earth.
The plot was interesting and I liked the pace of it. It had mystery elements, keeping me guessing what’s going to happen next. Hugh and Diana’s relationship was heartwarming. But at the same time the plot was a tad bit dull at times and I would’ve wanted more. There are some plot twists, which I did saw coming, as I’m suspicious about everything.
Gameplay, controls, audio and visuals
Pragmata is an action-adventure third-person perspective video game. Players control Hugh who has the android, Diana, on his back. They try to get from one place to another in the huge moon base, opening new areas one by one. There was a main hub area (safe zone) that can be built and decorated with things player finds along the way, mostly just things for Diana to enjoy.
The enemies are different types of robots that have to be dealt with heavy shooting. But first of all, their guard must be taken down by controlling Diana and hacking their system as quickly as possible. After their guard is down Hugh can shoot their weak points. Hugh have zero melee attacks so every enemy is dealt with using various of guns. Every gun have an unique aspect to them. Some can freeze enemies for short perioud of time, some can create a decoy of Hugh and enemies attack that, or some guns are just powerful but slow to use. So there are tactics to be done.
The gameplay also includes tons of upgrades, in other words, the game is extremely upgrade-heavy. I have to admit I was little bit confused about how everything works but after couple of hours into the game I did got hang of it. So, there are lots of various mods that can be equipped to make Diana’s hacking more impactful. Then there are tons of extra mods Hugh can equip to give him things like little bit more health, new moves, etc. And if that wasn’t enough Hugh’s spacesuit can be upgraded, as can Diana’s hacking skills… I mean there were so many things that can be added and upgraded and equipped that it might be little bit confusing everything that the game offers.
The gameplay in Pragmata was very hectic and fun to play. There are for sure some areas and bosses that might test your skills but it still feels good to play. Something fresh and new, for once.
Controlling Hugh was made good. He can run, jump, hover for a little while, dodge attacks and shoot enemies. Very basic, but I don’t think it needed anything else. Aiming was good and so was Diana’s hacking segments. But there is a learning curve for sure, but don’t fret, I think the game ease players to the gameplay well.
The game was voice acted and it was done well, I played this with and without headphones and made a realisation that it can be played well without headphones. But as any game that has tons of enemies around you, the headphone offers more detailed audio where they are.
Pragmata is very beautiful game visually. I played this with PS5 Pro and it truly shows the hardware’s capabilities. It uses the same game engine as newest Resident Evil games and I did saw the same weird artefact than in Resident Evil Requiem. It was like raindrops on surfaces even though there wasn’t any rain. That is the only nitpick I could say about the graphics.
Back to the Earth
Pragmata was a very good game and “something new” as I like to say. The whole hacking and shooting were done nicely and it really need some quick thinking and fast fingers to play this title. Only little negative thing was the overwhelming heap of upgrades and add-ons and whatnots that the gameplay offered. In my opinion less would’ve been more. I played this through in about 11 hours. I will play this again soon as I want to find all the collectibles and extra things. I’m gonna say that this is a must-play title, but if you want a taste of the gameplay before deciding of purchase, there is a demo available.
Pragmata is available on PS5 (reviewed on PS5 Pro), Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2 and Windows.
