A new Marvel’s fighting game
I cannot remember last time I played a fighting game. I think it must’ve been back in 2012 when Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 was released on PS Vita. So, it feels like a lifetime ago. Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls was recently released on PS5 and Windows and I wanted to try it out.
I played Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls on PS5 Pro.
Plot
One might think that fighting games don’t have any plot, but they do. Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls tells story of the mighty Champion that destroys worlds if they fail to produce worthy opponents. Earth is his next target and the Champion’s Promoter has chosen Captain America, Storm, Spider-Man, Ghost Rider, and Doctor Doom as team leaders, and they begin assembling teams of four to take on the Champion and hopefully save the Earth.
There are five different story modes to play in single player mode and they all tell the story of how the team leaders gather their other team members of to finally take the last battle with the Champion. I liked all the story modes and how it was told with colourful animations and comic strips.
Gameplay, controls, audio and visuals
Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls has offline story mode and online multiplayer mode as its main thing. There are five separate stories with gameplays in between the storytelling. I did found sometimes the computer player too difficult to beat but thankfully players can drop their difficulty level to try again. I did use this feature a lot, as I’m not that good with fighting games. The online mode also worked very well. I tried it couple of times and the lag was literally unnoticeable.
Controlling the characters felt good and they had lots of special attacks and combos to use. Only thing that bothered me was the running towards the opponent as players must press the directional button twice to run towards them. I know this is standard mechanics in fighting games, but personally for me I didn’t like it.
The whole game is voice acted, even the comic srips. I liked that detail and I think the voice actors were pretty close to the movie versions.
Visually Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls looks absolutely nice and colourful. Stylised, comic-like and detailed. I did enjoy the animations in the story mode, it was like watching a cartoon.
Thumb-numbingly good
Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls was a good game and I think it got me back to fighting games. I played the story mode through in about 4-5 hours. But there are lots of collectables and unlockables so the replayability value is high. Even though I rarely play these types of games any longer, but as a fighting game this is one of the best I’ve ever played.
Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls is available on PS5 (reviewed on PS5 Pro) and Windows.
