Another Moomin game!

I like Moomins. Back in the 90s I used to watch the Japanese-made cartoon everytime there was a new episode airing on TV. Moomin isn’t known all over the world, especially in USA. But in Europe, Japan and notably in Nordic countries the series is a huge thing. Moomintroll: Winter’s Warmth is the newest video game made by Norwegian studio Hyper Games. They made the previous game Snufking: Melody of Moominvalley, which I reviewed as 5/5. It was a cosy game with great story and artstyle.

I played Moomintroll: Winter’s Warmth through on Nintendo Switch 2.

Plot

Moomins are know from going to hibernation when the winter comes and waking up at spring. But something wakes up Moomintroll middle of the winter. He soon realises there are friends in need of his help.

The whole story of Moomintroll: Winter’s Warmth is about helping others. Moomintroll has to travel to the scary forest, to the treacherous mountains and dark caves. The story is about courageous, friends and coming over any obstacle. I liked the story. It was warming and charming, just the thing we need in today’s world.

Gameplay, controls, audio and visuals

Moomintroll: Winter’s Warmth third-person, top-down adventure game. Players controls Moomintroll in a snowy Moominvalley. Then gameplay consists of going places to palces and helping others whatever they needed, but usually it was that the main task couldn’t be fulfilled until some other little task was done first. Moomintroll has various items he can use such as a shovel to clear the large piles of snow, mittens which he can use to make snowballs, and other items which he’ll get as the game progress. So, there are areas that cannot be entered immediately as some items are needed for that. The gameplay was simple and easy to understand.

Controlling Moomintroll was also easy. Walking in the snow was slower, but after walking clearing a path it was quicker to walk afterwards.

Moomintroll: Winter’s Warmth isn’t voice acted, as was the case with the previous game. I wished it was as I strongly connect Moomins to the animated series.

Visually the game looks cute and charming. It had the same art style as the previous game had; everything hand drawn with little bit of watercolour style.

The spring will come

Moomintroll: Winter’s Warmth is a fulfilling little cosy game. It has a meaningful story, simple, yet good gameplay and beautiful graphics. I played this through in about 4 hours. This is a good little game to be played on a quiet Saturday afternoon.

Moomintroll: Winter’s Warmth is available on Nintendo Switch (reviewed on Switch 2), macOS and Windows.
