First DLC

Alan Wake 2 was released last year—October 27, 2023—to be exact. It was rather interesting game and in the end I did like it and reviewed it 5/5.

8 June, 2024, the base game got its first DLC; Alan Wake 2: Night Springs. I did play all three episodes and here is all I have to say about them.

Welcome to the elusive world of Alan Wake

If you don’t know anything about Alan Wake games and the works of the its developer Remedy Entertainment—well, I don’t know what to say. They have many games and very interesting storylines and worlds that seems to intertwine one way or another. I’m not gonna explain each game’s assembly because it would take forever, but believe me when I say this; they are extremely out there. So, with that said, these three episodes, in the Alan Wake 2: Night Springs, are some kind of medley with Remedy Entertainment’s previous games.

There are three episodes in this DLC in a style of 90’s TV-series Twin Peaks. The first episode tells story of Rose, the keeper of the Alan Wake 2’s cafe and—most importantly—the number one fan of the writer Alan Wake. She goes to a rescue mission to save her idol.

The second episode is about Jessie, the protagonist from the game Control. She tries to find her missing brother and goes through the mysterious, but familiar, amusement park from Alan Wake 2.

The last episode is about the Alan Wake 2‘s sheriff and he travels to the multiverse to find his way out.

Gameplay- and control-wise the game is same as the base game. It is a third-person shooter-survival game. There are some puzzles which I did found to be OK, but some of them a little bit annoying to do.

Visually the game looked good and same as the base game, even though there were some little graphical issues here and there, but nothing’s perfect, right.

Final Verdict

I did enjoy my little time with this expansion. I must warn you, if you thought this is a big expansion, because it wasn’t. The episodes are extremely short. I did play all three of them in about 1h 45min. It did left a bad taste in my mouth because I wanted them to be much longer and enjoy my time with the game. Overall, this was a nice little add-on to the odd world of Alan Wake 2, expanding the lore.

I do recommend this if you enjoyed the base game and are longing for some more.

Alan Wake 2: Night Springs are available on PS5 (reviewed), Xbox Series X|S and Windows.
