Yet another Resident Evil port

Recently we got Resident Evil 4 and Resident Evil Village on newest Apple devices, and I did reviewed one of them; RE4 got 4/5. Now the iPhone, iPad and Mac devices got Resident Evil 7 biohazard. I do have a Macbook Air with better M2-chip, but I did play this on my iMac with M1-chip, because it has bigger screen. Here is my experience with this port.

Story

Resident Evil has—as a whole series—rather difficult plot to put in a short words. It has many variations of viruses that the evil Umbrella corporation spread in the early games, but nowadays Umbrella is a long gone and there are so many other type of horrors in Resident Evil world. There are also a long list of characters, some reappearing, some new like the protagonist in Resident Evil 7 biohazard.

Ethan goes after his missing wife, Mia, and traces lead him to a rural American village in Lousiana. Soon he finds that she is truly there but a some kind of insanity has taken over the family that kidnapped her—and they want to stop Ethan saving Mia with all they got. There is also an odd mold that has taken over the whole estate, turning everyone into unkillable monsters and creating mold monsters. So Ethan tries to save Mia and get out of the horror estate.

The whole plot in Resident Evil 7 biohazard is rather interesting. There are some weird things and choices Ethan makes in the game, but the plot as from start to finish was excellent, excluding some parts of the game that are my least favourites, because they feel little bit off, such as the ship.

Gameplay, Controls and Visuals

I’ve played this game first time back in 2017 when it came out on PS4—and I played it through using PSVR system. It was rather terrifying experience! The game is first-person action-survival genre and it was the first Resident Evil game to be on that perspective. I did hate the idea, but it is obvious that the game was build around PSVR system at first—every other port comes as next.

The gameplay is little bit of like the first games; being in a mansion and doing puzzles and trying to find your way out. Then there are some areas that are more action-oriented and some that are little bit on horror side.

Controls were the same as in the original. I played this using PS5 controller (Dual Sense controller) on my iMac. The developer said that the game is build around using a controller and you’ll get the best experience with that. I found the controls being responsive, but there were one thing I would’ve liked; being able to run backwards.

Visually the game looked… old. In the beginning it became clear that there are some issues with the graphics. There were a lot on pop-ins that are mostly there when I played outside areas. Inside it was barely there. With graphical quality and visual fidelity the game looked good and bad at the same time. Some things had a much higher quality and some had very low. What comes to the shadows and light, well it was kinda bad looking.

Here is an example of the low quality shadows on the wall

Overall Technical Performance

The game ran perfectly. Smoothly like a butter. I had only a few minor hiccups. Resident Evil 4 and Resident Evil Village (Mac versions) had a lot more options for graphics and even showed the exact amount memory you can use. But Resident Evil 7 biohazard did not have all those. The graphic settings were very minimal and plain. I played this with medium settings so the game would run better. The resolution can be put very high up to (2560×1664) and I played this 1920×1080 and 60fps. I didn’t see much of a difference in graphical quality in higer resolutions, so I’m not sure why they there.

Shortly; the game runs smoothly and fast, but the visual qualities can be rather low.

The Last Ink Ribbon

Resident Evil 7 biohazard was a very good game to play again. The visuals were kinda bad at times, but mind you this is a 7 year old game! They haven’t done any remastering to this port, so the game’s overall quality reminded me of the PS4 version when it first came out. Is this the ultimate-best version of the game that you should play on your Mac and no other console? Well, no. But it is still a pretty damn good game.

Resident Evil 7 biohazard is available on Mac (reviewed), iPad, iPhone, PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, Stadia and Windows.
