SHadow Dropped
I didn’t know that Resident Evil 3 remake would get Mac, iPhone and iPad ports just as other recent Resident Evil games. It was basically shadow dropped and I randomly saw the launch trailer on Youtube. Well, there is no wonder that I bought the game immediately and played it through on my iMac with M1 chip.
Plot
Jill Valentine, the famous cop on S.T.A.R.S. team, tries to escape the zombie filled Raccoon City. Easy it is not as there are not just zombies and other monster on her way, but a nearly deathless S.T.A.R.S. destroyer, Nemesis. What Jill wants to do is to destroy this Nemesis being after her and her team mates, but she also wants a vaccine that can be found in the deepest pits of the infamous Umbrella laboratory, that had spread the virus into the city in the first place.
As I have played this game many times before I’m not stranger to the plot and how it goes. As this is a remake from the original game, there are lots of cut content making this version kinda shorter side. So, the plot was OK it has highs and lows, but managing to keep the intense atmosphere on all the time.
Gameplay, controls, audio and visuals
Player controls Jill as she fights her way out of the Raccoon City. As the main theme is survival horror the gameplay is that, but it is also kinda action-oriented. The game is played on third-person over the shoulder view, collecting ammo and health, doing some puzzles (that are on rather easy side), upgrading weapons by collecting parts. There are some boss battles with the Nemesis, which transforms to a different form after each encounter.
Controlling Jill was good and realistic. What I like in Resident Evil 3 remake was the dodge move which is lacking in other Resident Evil remakes. It feels only natural that you try to avoid enemies by dodging them. Aiming feels good as well and I played this through by using my PS5 Dual Sense controller.
All the audio was great. All the moans the zombies made and the eerie silence of some areas to all the music and sound effects did make this remake feel just right. Resident Evil 3 remake is fully voice acted and I think it is done well.
Visually the game looked good, but there are some bad graphics here and there, such as low quality hair. It ran pretty smoothly mostly in 60fps but it did stutter at times. I recommend to spend some time with the graphics settings to get the best experience out of this.
The final escape
Resident Evil 3 was a good experience to be played again after years. It has nice graphics, good story, well-paced gameplay and solid characters, but it is kinda shorter side. I played this through in about 4 hours, but I knew what to do and where to go, otherwise the game is about 6 to 7 hours long. I do recommend Resident Evil 3 to anyone who enjoys survival horror or wanna try this remake out.
Resident Evil 3 is available on Mac (reviewed on using iMac with M1 chip), iPhone, iPad, PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch and Windows.
