Yet another Resident Evil VR Mode

The last time I played Resident Evil VR game, it was Resident Evil 7. I never played it on TV, only with PSVR and it was a superior experience. I tried to play Resident Evil Village on my PS VR2 system, but somehow I did find the gameplay to be too tedious. Too much realistic movements and loading the guns that I didn’t find it to be so enjoyable, so I never played farther than the first part. Now, there’s a new VR Mode and it is for remake of Resident Evil 4—which was a fantastic game by the way—but does it suffer the same “too realistic” gameplay issue that I didn’t like in RE Village?

Story, Gameplay, Controls and Visuals

The story is the same as in the main game, so shortly; Leon S. Kennedy goes to rural Spain to find president’s missing daughter. Soon Leon finds that the villagers are hostile and they don’t want him there. This time around it’s not a virus that makes all the villagers crazy murderers, it is a parasitic arthropods called Las Pagas. The villagers have a leader they follow faithfully, Lord Saddler. So, this is the beginning of the plot and it’ll get much more complicated and new type enemies and villains get introduced. Resident Evil 4 is not a boring game story-wise, it got so much depth to it and it will keep players on their toes.

OK, here comes the part I was worried about. I don’t like too complicated VR games, I think too realistic and tedious gameplay and controls will ruin the experience. I know many will like them, but I personally don’t. In the beginning it did feel kind of complicated to use guns and load them. But soon I found out how they work, the game even has a practice mode where you can try how weapons work. Still, I did find some guns to be absolutely pain in the ass to use, such as shotgun and the necessary rifle (that is used to kill certain type of enemies). The shotgun also very difficult to use, since it had to be used with both hands, load it after every shot and then load the shells in… it simply was a way too much for me to handle fast enough as an “average” VR player as the enemies were attacking me from every direction. So the only guns I used were the handgun and the machine gun and I did upgrade the shit out of them! There are lots of other guns to choose from, they can be bought from the ever familiar merchant, but I didn’t bother to try them.

There also was many option for the controls, such as where you wanted to your gear to be width and end length-wise, and also where you wanted your guns to be. I did use them to personalise it to my preference and it did made a huge difference how I draw my weapons and load them faster. I do recommend to go through ALL the options/settings and change them to your liking.

The gameplay was as in the original version; you must kill enemies, collect the loot they drop, find key items to proceed another area. Everything aren’t as simple as it might sound. The enemies get more difficult to kill as you go from next area. In the beginning it just the simple villagers and their pitchforks and torches, but then the enemies gets other weapons, protections and mutations to make them harder to deal with. You must also do puzzles and deal with many various bosses.

Visually the game was absolutely a showcase. It was very realistic and as beautiful as the non-VR version. I did notice some pop-ups in the environment but that’s pretty much it.

I played this in the easiest mode, Assisted, and I didn’t found it to be too difficult, I did die a few times, but that’s pretty much it. I played it through in about 11h (two sittings) and I did save 56 times! Every other way Resident Evil 4 VR Mode was an exeptional experience. It ran well and there wasn’t any bugs/glitches or any issues. The game felt very polished and thought through.

If you own PS VR2 system and haven’t yet played this game (or you already own it, since it’s a free update) you should try this out.

Resident Evil 4 VR Mode is only available on PS VR2 at the moment.
