A Netflix series
Stranger Things is a Netflix owned series that tells about kids in the 80s who experience supernatural things. I’m not a super fan of the series but I have watched the series and I liked it a lot. What I like about the Stranger Things is not just the 80s fashion and affair, but how the series mixes supernatural aspects to the mundane 80s life. Stranger Things VR was released on Meta Quest VR earlier this year, until it was released on PSVR2 on December 5, 2024.
Plot
Vecna, also know as Henry, wants to get his revenge on Eleven (the main protagonist in the series) and the little town Hawkins. Vecna travels to new realities and brings the hive mind together. The plot is told through the eyes of Henry and how he’ll become Vecna, an evil entity.
The plost was OK, but to be fair if you don’t know nothing about Stranger Things it might feel very weird and hard to follow. There are many characters from the Netflix series and if you don’t know anything about their history—and even the main plot—everything becomes really odd really quick. I have watched the seires such a long time ago that I cannot remember everything so even for me the story was not easy to understand fully.
Gameplay, Controls and Visuals
The gameplay in Stranger Things VR is rather simple. Player must control Henry and go through his experiences. The game is rather straightforward, still not a walking simulator, but something between. What I must say that the gameplay was sometimes difficult as I didn’t know where to go. Some of the areas were difficult to understand where to go and I think the game should’ve been much more straightforward with that.
Controls are very easy to understand as well. Player has telekinesis powers and they are used to pick up objects, that can be thrown towards enemies to kill them. There is also a lots of climbing that feels very easy, opposed to some other PSVR2 games I have played where the climbing is very much annoying.
Visually Stranger Things VR looked OK. The game wasn’t going for realistic graphics, but rather stylised, almost like a cartoon. As many of the VR games player might get stuck in the environment; and I did sometimes.
Back to this world
Stranger Things VR was a OK experience; I didn’t enjoy it muchly because it was rather confusing. But still, there was lots of story and and backstory and it was a nice little dive back to the odd world of Stranger Things. I played this through in about 3 hours. Do I recommend this to everyone? No. But for Stranger Things fans this might be an average experience.
Stranger Things VR is available on PS5 (reviewed) and Windows.
