A new dark fantasy hack&slash VR game

I’m always open for a new PSVR2 game and my eyes got on this Skydance’s Behemoth that was recently released. It looks little bit Skyrim-like experience without being as fully-fledged open-world game. From developer that made The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners VR comes a new dark fantasy game that promises me to be able to “hack, slash, maim, sever, and rip apart enemies by using swords, daggers, axes, or even bare hands”. Well, this sounds fun!

Plot

The story follows Wren, a hunter who’s got this rot flowing in their veins that’s wiping out their village. Going into a journey to kill the old gods, the Behemoths, to stop the rot. Alone Wren does not go, in his mind there is a voice that guides him and helps him on his mission. The story was overall good and there were also secrets you can find that tell more of the world and lore.

Gameplay, controls and visuals

Once you got used to the gameplay and flow it feels kinda easy to play. It still is somewhat difficult if you’re not used to VR games, though. In the beginning the game tells that playing Skydance’s Behemoth will require players to do physical maneuvers. Meaning this game needs some stamina to play and my lazy ass could play this only a couple hours at once. So, the game is first-person hack&slash, with climbing, arrow shooting, item collecting and some puzzle elements. All of the forementioned will be done with most physical accuracy, so it might take on your arms after a while.

In the beginning everything felt so finicky and very much like every other VR game I played. Player can collect weapons, mostly swords and daggers, but there was also things like bow and arrow, and shields, which I only used when I had to as I found it to be too difficult to handle. But for those who seek very life-like battle experience Skydance’s Behemoth feels just right.

The gameplay consist of killing enemies, doing puzzles and proceeding to the next area. I found killing the basic enemies easy, but there are stronger enemies as well that might test your medieval battling skills. Not to mention bosses or the towering Behemoths that felt so satisfying after I took one down. I did enjoy the Behemoth-killing as they were different each time and well-designed.

Lastly I want to mention about the severing mechanics of the enemies. It is so well done that the first time I pushed my sword through enemy’s head I felt absolutely weird. Not to mention severing their limbs and such.

Controls were OK. Player can walk, run, swing daggers and swords, use bows and shields, block enemies attacks rather realistically, climb on rocks and use grappling hook, use healing items, and lastly, use powers that gives superstrength. Overall if you are new to VR games I think Skydance’s Behemoth might feel too difficult to handle so be cautious that this game isn’t for beginners in my opinion.

Visually, Skydance’s Behemoth looks okay as far as VR games go. Nothing overwhelming, but I prefer when VR games don’t try to be too sharp and detailed, as they can easily appear muddy and unsharp at close range, which makes my eyes hurt.

Rot in a good way

Skydance’s Behemoth was a very nice experience, even though it was physically little bit demanding. That’s why I recommend you to play this standing. I had to play this through in 2 hour periods and the game was about 7 hours long. If you like these types of medieval fantasy hack and slash games I do recommend you to try this one out.

Skydance’s Behemoth is available on PSVR2 (reviewed), Meta Quest 3, Meta Quest 2 and PCVR.
