A remake from Wanderer
Wanderer: The Fragments of Fate has seen some delays as it was supposed to come out last year. It is a remake of the original PSVR game from 2022 called Wanderer. I haven’t played the original version of the game but this remake I was really excited for as it looked interesting and something I haven’t played before. So, I won’t be comparing this to the original game at all.
Plot
You take on the role of Asher Neumann who, upon discovering a mysterious watch hidden in the attic of his late grandfather’s home, unlocks the extraordinary power to traverse time and space. Asher finds himself thrust into a world where the lines between past, present, and future blur, revealing secrets that have long remained concealed. All is not as it seems, as he must carefully decipher his grandfather’s cryptic instructions, which guide him through perilous journeys across different epochs. Each time he travels, he encounters pivotal moments in history that could dramatically alter the course of civilisation. Asher realises that he bears the heavy responsibility of setting back specific events in time, all while racing against forces that seek to ensure the collapse of human society.
As what comes to the plot, I think it was good. Interesting as I didn’t know where I will be time travelling next and what kinds of puzzles I have to solve in each place. Wanderer: The Fragments of Fate starts kinda boringly but if you can manage it about 30 minutes the game becomes very interesting and very quickly.
Gameplay, controls, audio and visuals
The gameplay and controls was, if I put it in short couple of words, good and bad. It was easy to control around the character, but I think the gameplay is sometimes very intricate that might frustrate players. I did enjoy the puzzles and I think that is where the game shines, but the combat was extremely bad. It was just hitting enemies with weapons that had little to no hitting power and what made all the things worse was that some enemies had armour on and hitting that didn’t do any damage. Even the enemy AI is very bad, they got stuck or just stood still doing nothing at times. It was aggravating for sure. Not to mention how the game tracks your hand movements wasn’t the best either. Climbing was OK-ish. There were some issues with that as well such as trying to swing yourself while hanging on a rope and grabbing the next object. Wanderer: The Fragments of Fate is also full of bugs and even game-breaking glitches.
Players have a companion with them, Samuel, that is a talking watch. It works as your guide and UI, storage system, time-travelling machine and a with new feature—the Echo Diviner—allowing you to locate lost items. In puzzles you can ask help from Samuel.
Wanderer: The Fragments of Fate is voice acted. The main character isn’t voiced at all which is little bit odd because I wanted to him have more personality that way. Sound effects were good even though there was this odd thing where my footsteps sounded like they came behind me, making me think all the time that someone is following me. Also the audio was off at times, such as it was difficult to hear other characters.
Visually Wanderer: The Fragments of Fate looked current and good. There were beautiful scenes for sure, but I think it is the lighting and shadows that makes everything look kinda bland sometimes. Players can basically touch, move and lift any object and it was good addition, making players to immerse them more to the world. But there are a down side to that because the game didn’t directly show what objects are necessary and what are not, making the puzzles little bit too difficult to solve. So what I wanted was the game to be little bit more clear with that and more streamlined.
Verdict
Playing Wanderer: The Fragments of Fate it became obvious why the developer decided to postpone the launch as this game still needed some time in the oven. It has great puzzles, story and setting, but the combat takes a big hit, literally. The game is also extremely frustration-inducing as it feels very half-baked. The game feels special with all the time-travelling and all the various scenes players are thrown into but still. My honest heart cannot recommend this game that much, until it is fixed.
